CHAPTER 16
Agent Barnes flashed his ID card to the guard at the security checkpoint.
"Thank you, sir." The guard held out a little rectangular device with a small ovular screen. "I just need you to speak your access phrase."
Barnes leaned out the window.
"F4 Pivot 72 Jerusalem."
The guard looked down at the device which vibrated a little.
"One more time."
Barnes flexed his jaw and leaned out further.
"F4 Pivot 72 Jerusalem."
The guard looked down at the device and the ovular screen turned green.
"Thank you, sir."
The guard stripped his walkie-talkie from his belt.
"We are go for access."
A handleless steel door broke ajar, and another guard with an assault rifle forced it wider from the inside.
"Hello, sir," he said. "Please follow me."
Barnes stepped inside and followed the guard down a long black hallway lined with an irregular pattern of doors, some colored red, others blue and two or three others solid yellow. At the far end of the hall, there was a sleek and shiny steel elevator with dimensions wide enough to hold a fairly large car. When they reached the elevator doors, the guard looked at Barnes.
"You'll need to speak your access phrase into the speaker."
Barnes looked at the speaker.
"F4 Pivot 72 Jerusalem."
The elevator doors shot open with a shocking suddenty, the rush of air disturbing both men's hair.
"Please step inside, sir," said the guard.
Barnes entered the elevator alone, and the doors closed just as fast. In less than five seconds, the doors opened once more, revealing the type of ordinary-looking lobby you'd expect at a dentist's office. Barnes stepped out, and a young, attractive woman rushed up to greet him.
"Hello, Agent Barnes, Mr. Cutter is dining right now, but you are welcome to join him."
Barnes looked her up and down, his bold stare making her skin itch.
"Alright," he said.
"This way."
He followed her toward a large door positioned a few feet from her cluttered desk. She banged a knuckle against it, and they both waited.
"Come in, come in," said a grumbly voice from within.
The woman opened the door and stepped inside.
"He's here, Mr. Cutter," she said.
Mr. Cutter grunted and gave her a nod.
"Show him in."
Sarah swallowed and bowed.
"Yes, Mr. Cutter."
She turned toward Barnes and gestured him forward.
"Right this way, sir."
Agent Barnes entered the room and looked around.
"Hello, Robert," said Mr. Cutter. "Have a seat."
Agent Barnes looked Sarah over again and then approached the table.
"That will be all, Sarah," said Mr. Cutter.
The woman bowed a little and left the room.
"Not bad, Donald," said Barnes as he took a seat at the table. "She looks like she has something working beneath that blouse."
Mr. Cutter took up his napkin and stuffed it into his shirt collar.
"Please," he said. "She's a decent assistant and that's about all."
"Whatever you say, Donald."
Mr. Cutter lifted a large knife and sliced away a flabby strip of steak. He stuffed the jiggly meat into his small wet mouth, barely visible amid an ensconcing coat of facial blubber.
"I want to know where we are on things," he said as he chewed.
Barnes shrugged.
"We're ok," he said. "Still on track.
